Lahnhof
This is the third point of the virtual triangle of wineries that the Costa family has created, bringing together fifty hectares of vineyard across three very different regions of Italy, all using the best possible team of wine-growers, agronomists, cellarmasters, and the world-renowned oenologist Carlo Ferrini.
Lahnhof is what is known here as a ‘maso chiuso’, a closed farm that is located at circa 550 metres above sea level, facing San Michele Appiano. This is the smallest of the Costa estates and has just three hectares of vineyards divided between Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, planted to densities of around 5,000 plants per hectare and trained to Guyot. The vines here are between seven and fifteen years of age. They face south-east and are planted up to altitudes of 700 metres.
Lahnhof is located in the Strada del Vino (Wine Road), which travels down from Bolzano towards the Lake of Caldaro, and is one of the best for producing quality wines in Alto Adige. It is located at the junction between the Val Passirio and the Val d’Isarco, and can boast a unique microclimate: relatively mild, protected from cold winds by a ring of Alpine mountains, yet both well-aired and sunny. Along this strip of high hills some of the top Alto Adige wineries are situated.
The first ever vintage (2010) of Lahnhof’s wines were released in April 2011 and include five single varietals under the Südtirol (Alto Adige) DOC.
