Mont’antico
Mont’Antico is a young estate founded in 2004 by the oenologist Raffaele Noviello. Situated in Montefalcione in the wine producing region Avellino, famous for it’s volcanic soils. The estate has only five hectares under vine, and Raffaele focuses purely on local grape varieties. The principal production is the Aglianico variety which is used to make the famous Taurasi DOCG, nicknamed the “Barolo of the south” for it’s rich complexity and powerful tannins. However, the estate also makes an Aglianico Irpinia DOC which is slightly softer on tannins but still with the full spectrum of flavours, and even an unoaked version, showing the variety in it’s most pure form. The white wines, all single varietals made from Fiano, Falanghina and Greco di Tufo, are perfect examples of what these grapes can achieve in this type of soil, with their wonderful lingering minerality.
