Bricco dei Guazzi
The Bricco dei Guazzi Estate is in Piemonte, near the town of Olivola in the “Monferrato Casalese” DOC. The property is situated at the top of a “bricco” (a local word simply meaning “hill”) and is surrounded on all sides by 100-year old cedar trees.
The hill has light colors due to the calcareous, marly soil. Truffles are very common and the whole area is particularly suited to red grapes because of the hot temperatures and limited rainfall.
The estate extends over 50 hectares of land, 30 of which are dedicated to vineyards.
The winery was completely renovated in 2004, with many of the vineyards replanted as well, and in particular the Barbera was replanted at extremely high densities in order to produce richer, more concentrated fruit.
The focus variety for Bricco dei Guazzi is the Barbera grape. The estate has gone to great efforts to produce a wine that is less traditional in style, with a deeper colour and with intensely rich in fruit, while still retaining the juicy acidity that Barbera is known for.
However, the estate has also earned a reputation for its white wines, with just a few hectares of vineyards dedicated to the Cortese variety for the production of their multi-award winning Gavi di Gavi DOCG. Made using the very latest in white wine-making equipment and with strict control of temperature during fermentation, Bricco dei Guazzi Gavi di Gavi is beautifully elegant and light with characteristic chalky minerality.
In the “La Presidenta” vineyard of the estate Merlot and Barbera are grown specifically for an exclusive wine that matures several months in barrique and offers aromas of small berries and an opulent and elegant body. La Presidenta will be available in the UK in 2011.
